Shapes everywhere
Most first and second graders have mastered the naming of simple shapes and are ready to move on to some of the more complex geometric shapes. Reinforce shape recognition at home with fun shape activities for kids, such as origami and Chinese tangrams. Use sidewalk chalk to draw shapes outdoors, and then use them to play a creative game of hopscotch. Cut pancakes, pizza and cookies into geometric shapes and discuss them while you eat. Pass monotonous waiting room time by counting squares in ceiling tile grids, rhombuses in rug patterns or rectangles in windowpanes. Encourage your child to look for shapes wherever she goes. These fun math games will strengthen her observation and counting skills, and will help her understand pattern recognition—the basis for geometry.
