Popsicle patterns

This colourful activity works on your child's pattern recognition.

You'll Need

  • Popsicle/Ice lolly sticks
  • Two contrasting colours of paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Newspaper

Here is an activity that works on pattern recognition.

Divide a group of popsicle/ice lolly sticks in half and paint the sticks two different colours, such as yellow and green. (Alternatively, use two colours of buttons, grapes, blocks, etc.) You can paint them yourself or recruit your child to help. Once the sticks have dried, begin to arrange them in a pattern, such as green-green-yellow, and ask your child to continue the sequence: green-green-yellow, green-green-yellow. Once they have mastered one pattern, create another and repeat.
