Storybooks are meant to be read from front to back. Children who have been read to extensively know this and are often surprised to discover that nonfiction books do not have to be read in this way. Introduce your child to the index, table of contents and captions found in informational books. When you sit down to read a nonfiction book or magazine, ask you child what he wants to know and show him how to find the information. By familiarizing your child with expository text, you're giving him the tools to gain knowledge from books.
