Short E: Scavenger hunt with Meg

Children develop phonemic awareness and basic reading skills by listening to the sounds in words. This printable encourages your child to find all the short-E words.

Learning Stages

Children develop phonemic awareness by listening to language. By saying the words in this activity with your children you will help them hear and identify sounds in words. The better children are at differentiating sounds in words, the easier time they will have learning to read.

First read the directions aloud. Pronouce the short-E sound (/e/ as in bet), not the letter name. Then read the word under one of the pictures. Ask children, "Does it have the /e/ sound?" If so, ask children to circle it.

When children have circled all the short-E pictures, ask them to read each short-E word.
