A great way to introduce Black History Month to your son is to talk to him about influential African Americans, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, and how they worked very hard to make the world a better place. You can share with him that many years ago, the United States was a very different place. People were treated differently because of the color of their skin. You can use books to help introduce him to the civil rights movement. Two great books are “Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” by Doreen Rappaport and “A Picture Book of Rosa Parks” by David A. Adler. After reading the books, talk to your son about how things have changed (for example, we now have an African American president, Barack Obama), and how there is still a lot of work to do to ensure that everyone is treated equally.
