Blended beginnings

Familiarize your child with common consonant blends.

You'll Need

  • Index cards
  • Pen or pencil

Learning Stages

As your child learns about consonant blends (such as snap and land) in school, you can use this activity to help him hear, say and see the blends in words. Write one beginning consonant blend on each index card: fl, bl, sl, cl, pl, bl, gr, tr, br, cr, dr, pr, fr, wh, str, sw, sp, sc, sn, sm, sk, gl, st. Turn all the cards face down. Have your child select a card, identify the sounds in the blend and then think of a word that begins with the letter pair, such as skip, frog or glad.
