Any tips for beginner books a 7-year-old won't find babyish?

A great place to look for beginner books that your 7-year-old might like is your local library. The wonderful thing about libraries is that they are free and have a great selection of books making it easier for your child to find something that sparks an interest. Librarians can offer some great recommendations and as they are very familiar with the library’s offerings. Mo Willem’s “Elephant & Piggie” series are great for beginner readers because they are written in a fun, comic book style that appeals to older children as well as preschoolers. Your child can read it alone or you can take turns being Elephant and Piggie. Another book your child might find fun is the interactive book “Press Here” by Herve Tullet.
