Patterns

Skills
Help your child develop her ability to recognize and imitate patterns.

Learning Stages

Begin by tapping or singing a pattern: bing [pause] bing [pause] bing bing bing. Encourage your child to copy the pattern with taps or song.

Experiment with other patterns, such as A-B-A-B-A-B, where A means tap with a pencil and B means tap with a spoon. Ask your child to make up and demonstrate new patterns.

Challenge him to apply the pattern to different domains—physical actions, for example. One counterpart to A-B-A-B-A-B above is hands up-hands down-hands up-hands down.
