You'll Need

  • 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup water

Only unleavened bread (matzah) is permitted during Passover because when the Israelites were fleeing Egypt, they did not have time to wait for their bread to rise. Although this recipe won’t be appropriate for an "official" Seder (it won't be kosher), it will give your child a good idea how bread was baked thousands of years ago.

1. Preheat oven to 550 degrees. Place the flour in a mound on a large cutting board. Slowly add the water, kneading the dough until it is firm.

2. Matzah sold in stores is typically thin and square, but if you want to eat something a little more like what was eaten in the days of old, roll the dough into thick circles.

3. Prick one side with a fork.

4. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at for 6 minutes, then turn and bake for another 2 minutes.
