Learning Stages
A haiku poem has five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five in the third. Take a nature walk with your child and explain that, in Japan, haiku poetry is used to describe nature and things in the natural world. Have your child select something in nature that he particularly loves, such as a flower, a butterfly or a cloud. Help your child compose a haiku about it, then instruct him to draw a picture to accompany the poem.
