Planning and organising before beginning a project helps to ensure that the project runs smoothly and the results are a source of pride. This lesson is one you can't learn too young.

If your child enjoys building toys, encourage your young builder to become a planner and designer, too. Give your child paper and a pencil and have your child make a drawing of what he or she intends to build next. Encourage him or her to write step-by-step directions in the form of numbered drawings.

After your child has planned his or her creation, it's time for the building to begin! After building, prompt your child to comment on his or her building plans. Did he or she run into any unforeseen problems? Did he or she end up changing the design while building? If so, why?
