Number hop

Get the knack for numbers with this leaping-lilypad game.

You'll Need

  • Chalk

Time

10 minutes

Go outside and draw 10 lily pads on the pavement with chalk. Write the numbers 1 through 10 in order on the pads. If your child is still learning his numbers, ask him to trace the numbers with his finger—this helps him internalize the number shapes and makes them easier to remember.

Then invite him to leap like a frog from pad to pad as you call out the numbers 1 to 10. To mix it up, change the numbers to 11 through 20, and then to 21 through 30. Other variations include asking your child to jump on the pads while counting backwards from 10 to 1, skip count by twos (2, 4, 6, 8 …) or skip count by fives (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 …).
