Learning Tip: What's that?

When you and your child are at a store, help your child learn the names of things new to her. For example, at a hardware shop, talk about the names of things you are buying and point out basic tools such as hammers and pliers. Children like to learn from functional definitions, so besides naming the tool, offer what job the tool performs, such as "The hammer is for pounding nails."
