The study of science begins with something that children have in abundance: curiosity. Science provides an opportunity for children to apply their natural enthusiasm to learning about the world.
Nature and outdoor environments are great spaces for young children to foster creativity, imagination and a developing sense of wonder. Nature offers children a ready-made environment for locomotor activities, for cooperative and dramatic play, and for interacting and investigating natural elements such as plants and bugs that children typically do not experience at school or at home. These activities can have both physical and mental health benefits. Nature also serves as a context for learning about and observing natural science and the world around them.
This week, encourage campers to observe, ask questions and draw conclusions as they explore and investigate the world around them.
Create a colorful "ocean" or snow globe with your camper by mixing colored water with oil and adding goodies for fun effects! Encourage your camper to think about why the oil and water mixture create such a stunning result.
Award your little scientist with a coloring certificate!
Take your camper to a farmer’s market this weekend. Look carefully at the fruits, herbs and vegetables. How do they differ from those in markets? Why aren't they packaged? How does the farmer bring his produce to the market?

If you think that learning should always be in season, you’re right! Studies have shown that when students return to school after a long summer vacation, they've lost about one month’s worth of learning.†
LeapFrog Summer Camp is designed to keep the learning going all summer long through exciting weekly themes and free, do-anywhere learning activities that explore geography, writing, science, art and more. Sign up to receive a Summer Camp email every other week.
