Activity: Will it float?

Materials:
Bucket or bowl, selection of items with some that will float and others that will sink (leaf, ping pong ball, spoon, penny, pebble, rubber duck)

Fill a bowl with water and collect some of the items listed in the materials list above. Pick up the items one at a time and ask your child if he thinks it will float. Let him put the item in the water to test his theory. Why did the item float or sink? Help your child understand that some things are lighter than water and some are heavier. This activity encourages your child to experiment, predict and draw conclusions—essential science skills.
