Activity: Farmers' market

Materials:
None
Time:
An entire morning or afternoon
Skills:
Health & nutrition, life science, resources & economics

Take your child to a farmer’s market on a Saturday morning.  Hand in hand, look at the fruits, herbs and vegetables for sale.

Ask your child how these foods differ from those in the supermarket. Why aren't they packaged and labeled?  How does the local farmer bring his produce to the market? How do supermarkets receive their wares?

Query the vendors on how their crops are grown. Did all that rain last month hurt, or help, his crop?  If Peter Rabbit ate Mister McGregor's carrots, who helps himself to your local vendor's garden?  What can be done about it?
