Learning Tip: Setting the table

Setting the table embodies one of the principal ideas underlying the notion of number: one-to-one correspondence. Ask your child to set the dinner table (or a make-believe table) for a given number of guests with napkins, plates and so forth. Each place setting should receive only one of each item. Point out that we count each item once: 1, 2, 3 spoons; 1, 2, 3 napkins, and so on. Ask Why do we count each item? (So one one is left out.) Having your child touch each item as she counts helps build the notion of one-to-one correspondence.
