Learning Tip: Hands-On Measurement Activities
In preschool, measurement activities often utilize non-standard items, such as blocks and erasers, as measuring tools. These unconventional benchmarks bring relevance to the activity, and they provide manipulatives for counting when the measurement is complete.
At home, help your child master this preschool math concept by using new pencils or clothespins to measure the length of his room, the width of an area rug, or the distance from one room to another. As your child measures, ask questions such as, “Which room was the longest?” or “Which rug was the widest?” to reinforce size and distance terms. Measuring is a fun, hands-on activity that your preschooler is sure to enjoy.
