Activity: Block power

Materials:
Blocks, square or rectangular surface
Time:
15-30 minutes
Skills:
Volume & capacity, sorting & classifying

Blocks are great math tools. Use them to talk with your child about size and shape and to introduce him to the concepts of area and volume. With different-sized blocks, ask your child: Which block is bigger? Which block is half the size? Will one block fit inside another? If you have a square or rectangular table, ask your child to guess how many blocks are needed to cover the table. Have him test his hypothesis.
