Materials:
Music of a variety of genres
Time:
15-30 minutes
Skills:
Music

Begin a music collection for your child. Find some music featuring several solo instruments to help your child become acquainted with the sound of each one.

Ask your child about sounds that are pleasant and others that are not so pleasant. What makes a sound pleasing? Vary the volume, pitch or tone and watch your child's reaction.

Introduce the idea that music can be associated with emotions—or even animals! For example, listen to Tchaikovsky's Peter and the Wolf. Can you imagine the various animals portrayed by the instruments?
