Learning Tip: "Read" the pictures

Even before your child learns to read words, he can learn to "read" the pictures. When you read aloud to your child, ask him to name and describe objects and characters that appear in the illustrations. For example, ask: What is the mouse wearing? What color is the mouse’s hat? How do you think the mouse is feeling in this picture?

This practice helps your child understand that pictures provide clues to reading. Later, when your child learns to read, using the pictures will help him figure out new words and aid in story comprehension.
