Activity: Buying beginnings

Materials:
None
Time:
15 minutes
Skills:
Phonological awareness

Tell your child that you’re going on a pretend shopping trip and that you can buy only things that begin with the /m/ sound. (Say the /m/ sound, not the letter name.)

Begin by suggesting that the two of you could buy a meal, a mule and the moon. Then ask your child what other things you could buy: Can we buy milk? (Yes!) Can we buy a mouse? (Yes!) Can we buy cake? (No! Cake doesn't begin with the /m/ sound.) Repeat the game with other beginning sounds.
