Activity: Summer buggin'

Materials:
Jar with lid, hammer, nail
Time:
One hour
Skills:
Life science, animals

Make a see-through glass bug home using an old jelly jar. Be sure to punch air holes in the lid using a hammer and nail. Ask your child: Why do we need to poke holes in the jar? Does our home have any openings in it? Can you think of any animals that don't need fresh air?

Send your child on a bug hunt to collect as many different specimens as she can to for her jar. Observe the bugs together. Ask what else her bug friends might need: Food? Water? To be with their families? Ask questions that expand your child's thinking about the natural world and the habitats that support life.

Return the bugs to the outdoors before bedtime.
