Learning Tip: Sing out!

Count forwards and backwards during everyday routines. When climbing a set of stairs, sing up the musical scale as you count the steps. Descending the stairs, sing down the musical scale as you count backwards. Are there the same number of steps going up as going down? This can help teach your child one-to-one correspondence. Once you've counted something, and nothing has been added or taken away, the quantity stays the same! Riding in the car, lead your child in singing Rock Around the Clock or Ninety-Nine Boxes of Juice on the Wall. Create variations to focus on different skills, such as skip counting by twos, fives or tens.
