Learning Tip: One, two, buckle my shoe

Mother Goose and other collections of nursery rhymes are rich resources for math literacy. They offer many rhymes having to do with counting. Remember One, two, buckle my shoe or Ten little soldiers standing in a line?

Find nursery rhymes or other number poems, perhaps your favorites when you were younger. As you read them aloud to your child, act them out with your fingers. Try to make up number poems of your own, such as:

One, two, three, four
[Your child’s name] is at the door
Five, six
She plays tricks
Seven, eight
Numbers are great!
