Sounding out, or decoding, words with the consonant-vowel-consonant pattern (such as dog) is a great place for an emergent reader to start. Sorting words based on their sounds helps children pay attention to the individual sounds within words.
Before sorting the words into their boxes, say each word aloud together, so your child is focusing on the sounds in the words, and not just matching up the letters.
