Learning Tip: Teach Your Child to Open Up

While some kids are non-stop talkers, others may be on the quiet side. If your child seems reluctant to chat, there are plenty of ways you can help encourage her to be more verbal. One technique is to ask plenty of open-ended questions that can’t be answered with "yes" or "no." For instance, instead of asking “How was school today?” try a question that’s more specific: “What was your favorite part of school today?”

Ask her to narrate a wordless picture book, describe her favorite TV show or recount a favorite memory. If you’re more forthcoming, you’ll likely notice your child opening up in response.
