"Hey, Watch This!"
Shelby Moore
January 18, 2011
As a parent, I'm sure you're all too familiar with your child yelling to you from the playground, "Hey, Mom/Dad, watch this!" Kids are always eager to show you their latest accomplishments.
This week, like your
children , I am saying to you, "Hey, watch this!"What I am intrigued to share with you is my latest educational finding: A Kindergarten class trades in their chairs for exercise balls -Have you seen this?!
Watch the video here.

As a Kindergarten teacher, I see these kids all the time who are wiggling all over the place and can't sit in their chair for the life of them. I wonder if this could work as nicely in my Kinder classroom--especially for those with shorter attention spans. I also can't help but thinking of the safety factor of these balls--are they truly safe?
Switching from chairs to stability balls seems to have many benefits:
- Good classroom management
- Improves focus
- Gives active kids sensory input and helps calm them down
- Can increase physical fitness by building core strength
Can you think of any Cons?If you are a parent of a Kindergarten student I am interested to hear from you.
- How would you feel if your child's Kindergarten classroom used stability balls rather than chairs?
- Do you think it would be harder for your child to transition from Kindergarten to 1st grade knowing they would have to sit in a chair in 1st grade?
