Learning Tip: Geographic diversion

In colonial days, geography was thought of as a "diversion for a winter's evening." Reinforce your child’s geography skills by posting a map of the world a wall in your house.

When geographic places are mentioned on the news, on the radio or in the paper, challenge your child to locate them on the map. Ask her to identify the country and continent where the place is located. Talk about the context in which the place was mentioned. If available, use the Internet to find more information on the country or region. The CIA Factbook is an excellent source for maps and hard facts about every country in the world. A more kid-friendly source with activities is the National Geographic Kids website.
