Learning Tip: Keep peer pressure at bay with role play

Role playing is a constructive way to prepare your child to deal with situations that challenge him to stand up for what is right.

Begin by assuring your child that there is usually someone around who can assist with conflicts: a teacher, a neighbor or another trusted adult. Come up with scenarios in which he has to go against the group. Ask your child to act out ways to respond to the situation in a positive way: Can you help your friends make better decisions? How would you react to someone who is bullying you or one of your friends?

Have him brainstorm possible solutions devise a plan of action to resolve the problem. Friendship skills become very useful life skills, recalling the old adage, "To make a friend, be a friend."
