Learning Tip: Chore jar

Instead of assigning chores to your child, introduce the concept of a family chore jar. Fill the jar with pieces of paper with different chores that are age-appropriate for everyone involved. Explain that for a house to operate smoothly for everyone, it takes work by everyone. Have each participant draw chores from the jar. This adds an element of chance that makes chores more appealing, and ensures that no one is always stuck with a hated task, such as emptying a litter box. Offer to let your child trade a chore if she can find someone else willing to swap tasks.
