Learning Tip: Build a Library

In first and second grades, your child will continue to build on the early literacy skills she developed in preschool and kindergarten. To promote reading comprehension, build a library of high-quality, educational books for girls and let her choose the titles for your shared reading sessions. Look for beginner books (such as the classic Dr. Seuss favorites) that make use of lighthearted rhymes, repetitive phrases, predictable storylines and colorful illustrations that will capture and hold your child’s attention.

Your child will reap more rewards from books if she can relate to the plots, so choose stories that mimic the milestones and challenges she’s currently facing, such as starting a new sport or moving to a new house.
