Activity: Fall Leaves Search and Sort

Materials:
Crisp fall day, bag for collecting
Time:
One hour
Skills:
Sorting & classifying

There are few things nicer on a beautiful fall day than strolling with your young child. Set out together on a crisp autumn day, letting her set the pace for the walk. Have fun collecting leaves together. Gather as many different types as possible. Put them in a bag for the journey home.

After returning home, warm up with some hot cider or cocoa, then begin to work with your child sorting the leaves into different groups. Let your child take the lead and notice what kinds of groups she decides to form. She might sort for size, color, shape or even crispiness! If your child really takes an interest in sorting, try a "mystery sort." Take all or some of the leaves and divide them into two or three groups based on categories that you choose. Ask your child if she can figure out which characteristics you sorted for. Then switch roles and watch your child enjoy asking you to figure out her categories!
