Writing that informs
By now, your child should realize that reading and writing are for more than just telling stories. They are also ways of exchanging information. Model behavior for him by reading directions out loud as you follow them, talk out the process of looking up information like finding a phone number and talk out loud as you write directions or lists for other people. Encourage your child to begin both reading and writing informational material. Some examples: help your child understand how to read simple maps, then have him write down the directions; ask your child help you keep grocery lists; ask your child to help you make birthday invitations and address them.
