First sounds
With your child, look at things around the two of you or at pictures in a book. Ask your child to name the objects she sees and then to say just the first sound in each object's name: a tree ... /tr/, a bear ... /b/, the rain ... /r/, a child ... /ch/ and so on. These sounds become the foundation of your child's phonemic awareness, the idea that words are made of sounds. This is one of the many clues your child will use when learning to read.
